Israeli researchers have developed an "invisible mask" that protects against the coronavirus, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), influenza and other respiratory viral infections, the Israel Technical University (Technion) announced on Thursday.
The new type of mask provides airflow in front of the user's face. The lightweight device itself, which can be used several times and also contains an air filter, can be mounted on a cap or headgear, explained the Technion.
The air flow protects the eyes, nose and mouth, while the facial expressions of the human face remain recognizable and do not hinder oral contact either.
The researchers successfully tested the new technology, proving that it effectively blocks the tiny droplets produced during breathing and speaking, as well as the larger droplets produced during coughing and sneezing.
The Technion said that based on surveys carried out in nursing homes, universities, shops and offices, there are clear benefits to the "invisible mask".
