German artillery has stopped live fire practice because there is not enough ammunition. But the lack of ammunition also plagues the Bundeswehr units in general, according to the Ministry of Defense, they could only last a few days in a critical situation.
The German army would collapse in a few days if the country were to be attacked by a foreigner. There is a chronic shortage, not of soldiers, but of ammunition, which is only exacerbated by the support provided to Ukraine, the report of the Süddeutsche Zeitung revealed. According to the paper, the Ministry of National Defense puts the amount for which the federal government should purchase if it wants to meet NATO requirements at 20 billion euros.
According to one of the provisions of the North Atlantic Treaty, the forces of each allied country must be ready to spend thirty days on active duty, on deployment, if necessary. In comparison, the Bundeswehr's stockpile would last for a few days at most, and the situation with the artillery is so bad that the soldiers can't even practice sharpshooting.
Bundestag Commissioner for Armed Forces Eva Högl told the Süddeutsche Zeitung on Monday that the government needs to put an agenda on the table as soon as possible, showing how it will close these gaps in a short period of time. The chairman of the defense committee of the German parliament, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, also called the problem "serious" and said it was time for "something to finally happen."
The paper added: on Monday, representatives of the arms industry and several ministries gathered at the chancellery for a high-level meeting to learn about the situation and its management options. In this regard , the government spokesman admitted: the troops lack ammunition everywhere .
