On Monday afternoon, Roberta Metsola announced on her Twitter page that, at the request of the Belgian authorities, she proposed an expedited procedure in order to suspend the immunity of the two members of parliament involved in the scandal that rocked the EP as soon as possible.
Although the President of the European Parliament did not name exactly who it is and in what matter, it can be assumed that it is the corruption scandal affecting Qatar that broke out in December.
One of the main suspects in the case is the Greek Eva Kaili, who was the vice president of the EP until the case broke out, and the other is the Belgian Maria Arena, whose assistant was Kaili's husband.
Metsola indicated on her social media page that no one goes unpunished.
Eva Kaili and her companions were detained on December 9, and one and a half million euros were seized by the Belgian authorities during house searches. The husband of the former vice-president of the EP admitted the charges. According to him, he was a member of a lobby organization that was used by several Arab states to interfere in EP decisions.
