"The year starts with good news: the national debt decreased more than expected, last year's deficit target was met," wrote Mihály Varga on his social media page.
The Minister of Finance indicated that the budget deficit was 4.9 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) last year, as planned, while taking into account the purchase of natural gas reserves, it was 6.1 percent.
The national debt decreased more strongly than expected, its ratio to the gross domestic product improved to 73.5 percent from 76.8 percent in 2021.
Mihály Varga added to this: "We will continue to improve the balance indicators this year as well, we are expecting a further decrease in public debt and a lower deficit".
