The European Union has recently allowed the addition of insect meal, i.e. house crickets, mealworms, locusts and grain mold beetles, to our food.
But the leadership in Brussels forgot to ask 500 million European citizens whether they want to take advantage of this "wonderful opportunity".
If the Western leadership were honest, it would be mandatory to indicate on our food in the future whether it contains bugs and from then on, the European customer can decide whether he wants to live by eating bugs or not.
But it is not mandatory, in fact they hide the content from us with the code E 1301 or by entering the Latin names of the insects.
Therefore, the editors of Mindenszó wrote an open letter to Dr. To the Minister of Agriculture István Nagy, with the following questions:
- what will be the effect on the Hungarian agricultural sector that the "traditional" flour will slowly replace, or possibly displace, the "bug" flour?
- are there any health impact studies, at an international or domestic level, on the effects (dangers, infections, bug excrement, infectious diseases) of consuming bugs, worms, and insects on a child, an adult, or an elderly human body?
- since the EU made such a significant decision so suddenly, so quickly, without consulting the European citizens, does the Hungarian government intend to respond to this central decision?
- shouldn't the Hungarians be asked during an agricultural consultation about what we think about this decision of the European Union?
- is the Parliament planning to enact a law that, following the EU's unilateral decision, domestically marketed and purchased food must be labeled as containing or not containing the worms and beetles listed above?
