The former Slovak Prime Minister gave an exclusive interview to the public media. Among other things, Robert Fico talked about: his most important goal is to create a stable government majority in Slovakia, like the one Viktor Orbán and Fidesz created in Hungary.
The politician shares the same opinion as the Hungarian Prime Minister about the Russian-Ukrainian war, and stated that if he gets into government, he will stop arms shipments to Ukraine from Slovakia.
After long debates and an invalid referendum, the Bratislava parliament decided on the last day of January that early elections would be held on September 30 in Slovakia. According to political experts, the Heger cabinet, which is currently ruling in a minority, is headed for certain downfall. The number one candidate for early voting may be former Prime Minister Robert Fico's alliance, Smer.
"Anyone who follows Slovak politics knows very well that political stability has always been linked to my party. A little like your country, where political stability is tied to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Fidesz," said Fico.
In an exclusive interview with the public media, the president of the party, which won elections four times before, spoke about the fact that after the voting at the end of September - if his alliance wins - the number one goal is to create a stable government.
Robert Fico said: the task of the new cabinet will be to stabilize the economy, manage runaway inflation and energy prices. For this, the measures introduced in Hungary will also be used as a model.
"I think that if the sanctions don't work, then something needs to be done differently. We have to find something else. But if the sanctions don't work - on the contrary, they harm us - then maybe we should change this sanctions policy," he said in the interview.
Just like the Hungarian Prime Minister, Robert Fico also considers the EU's sanctions policy to be flawed, and he also went on to say that he is sad to see that the V4 cooperation at the EU level is not the most ideal right now. According to him, the Visegrád countries were much better able to represent their interests in Brussels during his previous term of office. In the event of his eventual return to power, he would again count on the support of Viktor Orbán.
"This is not a war between Russia and Ukraine. This is primarily a war between the USA and the Western world and Russia in Ukraine," emphasized the former prime minister.
On the Russian-Ukrainian war, it takes a similar position as Budapest. According to Robert Fico, small countries like Slovakia, Hungary or the Czech Republic really suffer the damage caused by the war. The former head of the Slovak government stated that if he were to come to power, he would stop the arms deliveries to Ukraine.
"I think that a peace plan that is not very striking is better than a war plan, that is, to continuously prolong the war in Ukraine. If my party becomes part of the government coalition, then we will stop the delivery of weapons from Slovakia to Ukraine, because we do not believe that this is the solution to the problem," he said.
