The Hungarian people expect strict measures to protect children and young people, the latest survey of the Századvég Foundation found. 68 percent of the respondents consider it necessary to tighten legislation in this area.
The public opinion survey - which was carried out in February by asking a thousand people - states that there was a national outrage when a nearly forty-year-old pedagogical assistant of a Budapest elementary school explained in a video post that she had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy.
With regard to the case, Századvég surveyed what the public thinks about adults and teachers engaging in sexual relations with minors, focusing on the issue of tightening the relevant legal regulations.
It was emphasized that
the Hungarian population condemns relationships that threaten the development of children and adolescents.
The research data showed that two-thirds of the respondents (66 percent) had heard that a male teacher at a primary school in the capital was dismissed from his job in the past few days because he declared in a post published on his social media that he had sexual relations with a 15-year-old boy.
"It can be concluded that the public considers it crucial to ensure the appropriate mental and moral development of children and adolescents, and therefore uniformly rejects the formation and maintenance of sexual relationships that endanger them," they said.
95 percent of Hungarians do not consider it acceptable for an adult to have a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old juvenile, and 96 percent of them are against a teacher having such a relationship with a juvenile entrusted to him, they wrote.
They went on to say that pedagogical activity plays a decisive role in the healthy development of children and adolescents, therefore the staff of public education institutions have an increased responsibility for the protection of those under the age of 18.
68 percent of the respondents consider it necessary to further tighten the laws in order to protect children and juveniles and to prevent similar cases, they wrote.
