As of May 1, a monthly national pass and county pass valid for both buses and trains will be introduced. The county pass will cost 9,450 forints, and the monthly national pass will cost 18,900 forints, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced at his annual review. The introduction of the county pass and the national pass in public transport will be an epoch-making change, the MÁV-Volánbusz group announced about the provision.

The MÁV-Volánbusz group wrote that the domestic intercity community service providers are carrying out the most significant tariff development of the past three decades.

It was pointed out that from May 1st, with the new passes, you can travel the entire county, or even the entire country, using MÁV-START, Volánbusz, MÁV-HÉV or GYSEV flights.

Travelers will be able to use the intercity flights of these companies without restriction in the area indicated on the pass. The county pass and the national pass make it possible to travel on tens of thousands of buses and fixed-route routes without having to buy another ticket or pass.

It is hoped that with the introduction of the new tariff products, both road and fixed-track interlocal public transport will become more competitive and attractive, will mean better service, more flights, less waiting, and will have a positive effect on domestic tourism and hospitality as well.

The new passes can be purchased at MÁV-Start ticket offices, vending machines and the MÁV app, Volánbusz ticket offices, buses and GYSEV ticket offices. They are expected to be available for pre-order in some sales channels in the last week of April.

The full-price county pass valid for 30 days can be purchased for 9,450 forints, while the 30-day national pass will cost twice as much, 18,900 forints. The student pass can be exchanged with a 90 percent discount, it will be HUF 945.

The full-price county pass will be cheaper than the monthly Budapest pass, or 15 liters of fuel – enough to travel 250-300 kilometers on average – calculated at mid-February prices, they said.

Those who regularly cross the county border during their travels can purchase a national pass valid for the entire territory of the country for the price of two county passes. This will be HUF 2,500 cheaper than the current pass valid for 30 kilometers. By choosing this type of pass, students can take advantage of the 90 percent discount, so they can go almost anywhere in the country for HUF 1,890, they wrote.

They also announced that the county pass and the national pass cannot be used on trains requiring a seat ticket, in 1st class, and also on the flights of local public transport companies. The Pest county pass and the national pass are not valid on BKK flights either, but they can be used on the flights of intercity service providers within Budapest.

Employers reimburse 86 percent of the price of the full-price pass, so passengers can travel at their own expense for about HUF 1,300 in the case of a county pass, and slightly more than HUF 2,600 with a national pass, choosing the local service providers.

It was pointed out that a significant part of non-long-distance – regional and suburban – trips take place within the county or between neighboring counties. In regional and suburban transport, especially for those living in smaller settlements, the new pass helps to reach several nearby settlements, but the passes that can currently be purchased will also remain.

The government will reimburse the transport companies for the loss of revenue caused by the discounted passes, the announcement states.
