Poland this month proposed a new package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, according to a document seen by Reuters on Tuesday. The new package would ban diamond imports and pipeline oil imports, Mandiner .
According to a diplomatic source speaking to Reuters, the proposal has already been submitted to the European Commission. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously said that a possible 11th package would focus on combating the circumvention of already existing restrictions, particularly on parts and equipment deployed by Russia on the battlefield of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Warsaw's proposal would stop Russian crude imports through the northern section of the Friendship Pipeline to Germany. It would end Russian diamond and natural gas imports, including LNG, and limit nuclear energy cooperation.
How would the new sanctions affect the European Union?
Germany and Lithuania also support nuclear energy sanctions, but are lenient on those (such as Hungary and France) who trade with Russia.
Until now, our country has strongly opposed sanctions related to Russian nuclear energy, but last week it agreed to amend its contract with Russia's Rosatom on the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant.
Belgium, home to Antwerp, the world's largest diamond trading center, has so far successfully lobbied against a ban on Russian imports.
Poland considers itself one of the EU's leading anti-Russia fighters and an enthusiastic supporter of Kiev. However, as Warsaw worries about losing the support of farmers ahead of this year's national elections, it banned grain imports from Ukraine this week.
