The Budapest self-government is suspending the government's funding - Mayor Gergely Karácsony began his extraordinary press conference at the City Hall with this resounding announcement, according to Magyar Nemzet.
According to Karácsony, this means that - as he put it - "they collect their debts" from the government.
He also said: the capital cannot pay several different taxes into the central budget, amounting to around five to ten billion forints, and they are asking the tax authorities to reschedule them. At the same time , the solidarity tax is questioned, it is not considered legal. He emphasized:
a lawsuit is filed in the administrative court to reduce the amount of the solidarity contribution.
Karácsony's resounding announcement is also strange because the solidarity contribution levied by the government on the wealthier municipalities is not technically paid into the central budget by the wealthier, higher-income local authorities, but is deducted by the state from the subsidies granted to the municipalities, and then provides additional resources to the poorer municipalities.
According to unanimous opinions, it is impossible for a settlement not to pay solidarity tax, as it is collected by the Hungarian State Treasury immediately when it allocates the subsidies intended for the given settlement.
At his press conference, the left-wing mayor also explained that the government's austerity measures have made the financial situation of the capital difficult, and according to him, they would not be able to do this year without a package of measures.
