Kate Winslet won the most recent BAFTA TV Award for her role in 'I Am Ruth'. When the actress-mother of three took the stage at the awards ceremony to accept the coveted award, she took the opportunity to talk about a very real, modern issue affecting kids today: social media.
The film "I am Ruth" deals with one of the increasingly disturbing problems of our time, in which the online world forms an almost impenetrable wall between parents and their teenage children. In the virtual world, impressionable and often vulnerable children almost isolate themselves from their loving family members, because the world of social media literally “sucks” them in.
In the film, Winslet plays the mother, Ruth, named after a biblical figure known for her patience. Ruth is in a constant struggle with her unfriendly and defiant daughter Freya. By the way, Freya is played by Winslet's real daughter, Mia Threapleton. The aloof behavior of the young girl leads to constant tension and despair.
Unfortunately, the situation shown in the film may be familiar to many parents raising teenagers these days.
When the Titanic actress stood up to accept the award, she was visibly moved and wanted to deliver a powerful message about a topic close to her mother's heart.
Winslet first spoke to her daughter, saying she would like to cut the statue in half and give half to her. He said that Threapleton gave an exceptionally great performance in this emotional and frightening subject.
He then spoke about the film, which was made for "families who feel held hostage by the online world and its dangers". However, he also sent an encouraging message to teenagers stuck in the world of social media. He put it like this:
"This doesn't have to be your life!" He also explained that, believe me, there is no shame in asking for help.
The multi-award-winning actress also spoke to the controllers of the online world, and very firmly. He asked them to
"uploading harmful content should be a punishable act", even if possible, it should be eliminated completely.
He concluded his short speech with an effective and concise message:
We want our children back!
