Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sent his best wishes to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic in a letter on the occasion of the national holiday of the Republic of Croatia, Croatian Statehood Day, Bertalan Havasi, Deputy State Secretary in charge of the Prime Minister's Press Office, told MTI on Tuesday.
"National sovereignty is one of the most important values for us here in Central Europe. We are proud that Hungary was one of the first to provide unconditional support for Croatia's efforts in this direction, and was also one of the first to recognize the country's independence," recalled Viktor Orbán in his letter.
He added: Croatia's accession to Schengen is a significant, shared historical success for our country and Central Europe. The abolition of the internal borders of the European community creates many new opportunities for the development of our relations, both in terms of economic cooperation and the everyday life of our citizens, he underlined.
At the same time, Viktor Orbán pointed out that protecting the external Schengen borders is also a shared responsibility. "We now have to stand up as neighboring Schengen member states in protecting the southern border, and I assure you that my government is ready to provide Croatia with all the support it needs," concluded the Hungarian Prime Minister in his celebratory letter.
