The European Parliament wants to prevent Hungary from holding the presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2024 because the left-wing majority of the institution does not like Hungary's pro-peace position, Justice Minister Judit Varga stated in Brussels on Tuesday.

Judit Varga said that the EP's initiative shows the institution's frustration, since one of the priorities of the Hungarian Council presidency will be to check the functioning of the rule of law and the principles of the rule of law in the work of the European Union institutions.

Hungary wants to check, among other things, whether the European Parliament, which is "bathed in corruption scandals", complies with its own rules and EU legal principles. He also wants to check whether the European Parliament serves the interests of European democracy and European citizens or its own power interests, the Minister of Justice emphasized.

"The European Parliament does not respect either democracy or the rule of law, as it wants to use an initiative this week that clearly goes against the European Union treaties".

Judit Varga, of the EU Council, called Tuesday's hearing on the procedure initiated against Hungary in accordance with Article 7 of the EU treaties to check compliance with the rule of law a "sick, tired procedure". He stated: it is clear that in the case of the procedure initiated by the EP five years ago, it is still a matter of political pressure.

"Previously, our position against immigration was the problem, then the protection of families, and then the pro-peace position of the Hungarian government, supported by the Hungarian people, is not liked by the left-wing majority of the European Parliament".

He drew attention to the fact that the procedure according to article seven is not related to the presidency of the EU Council. The presidency is a duty and an honor, not a right that can be taken away from a country, he stressed.

The EU parliament was "not dealt a card" in the matter of who will hold the position of president of the council of the union.

The European Parliament must be managed in its place. The EP always wants to become part of the problem instead of the solution. Instead of addressing the needs of their own constituents, some European politicians attack the democratically elected government and voters of a country. That is why it is most important that European citizens learn a lesson and express their opinion in the European Parliament elections due at the beginning of next summer, added Judit Varga.
