The Kyiv parliament did not make a big deal about giving a year's grace to "switch to the Ukrainian language" for schools where teaching is conducted in one of the EU languages
Ukrainian MPs have approved a bill extending the transition period for schools teaching in one of the EU languages until September 1, 2024.
According to the adopted legislation, those persons belonging to national minorities living in Ukraine, whose mother tongue is considered an official language in the European Union, and who started general secondary education in the language of the given national minority before September 1, 2018, will continue until September 1, 2024 also receive education in their mother tongue according to the rules before the entry into force of this law, with a gradual increase in the number of subjects taught in the Ukrainian language.
In practice, this means that the students of the Hungarian, Polish and Romanian departments can definitely study in their mother tongue in the next school year.
In March, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made it clear that his government would not agree to Ukraine's future accession to the EU without further concessions on the education law, which has been one of the main causes of problems in bilateral relations in recent years, according to Ukrainská Pravda, which also reminds Szijjártó Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter stated: Budapest will not support Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic and European integration as long as Transcarpathian schools are in danger.
