Treat Williams, the star of Hair and the Everwood series, died in a motorcycle accident on Monday night, the actor's family announced.

The fatal crash happened near Dorset on Monday afternoon, Vermont police reported. The 71-year-old actor was taken to Albany Hospital, but they could not save his life, Variety.com wrote.

At the age of 28, Williams achieved her first major film success in the film Hair directed by Milos Forman. He received a Golden Globe award as the discovery of the year for his portrayal. Two years later, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his performance in the Sidney Lumet film Prince of the City.

His memorable performances included the romantic drama Smooth Mouth, released in 1985, in which he played Laura Dern's partner, and one of the cult films of the nineties, Ghost Ship, directed by Stephen Sommers.

In the TV series Everwood, he played a Manhattan brain surgeon who moves his family to Colorado after the death of his wife. She was also nominated for a Hollywood Screen Actors Guild (SGA) award for the series, which lasted four seasons.

Williams has appeared in a number of TV series, including Good Advice, Brothers, The Tempest, Head to the Wall, Special Operations, The Big Fraud and Chicago Fire.

Born in Rowayton in 1951, the actor attended Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania before his career took off. In 1975, he made his big screen debut in the movie Deadly Hero.

He is survived by his wife, Pam Van Sant, and their children, Gil and Elinor Williams.
