There is no social group in Hungary that would support the Brussels plan for a migrant quota, even the majority of leftists reject it, according to research by the Nézőpont Institute.
More than three-quarters of Hungarians (77 percent) agree that the European Union can only send immigrants who have submitted asylum applications to the territory of the country with the consent of the Hungarian government. The rejection of the migrant quota, which seeks to overwrite the sovereignty of the nation-state, represents a majority position in all social groups, and also exceeds party political preferences.
It is not surprising that almost the entire ruling party voting camp (93 percent) would insist on protecting the powers of the nation-state and oppose the resettlement of immigrants according to a mandatory quota. And it is a warning sign for the left-wing parties that tacitly support the plan that even the majority of left-wing voters (58 percent) oppose the principle of the migrant quota, and only a third of them (32 percent) consider it acceptable.
The migrant quota plan has been on the agenda since 2015. It came into the center of attention again when recently, despite the Hungarian counter-vote, the EU interior ministers adopted a mechanism based on which Hungary would have to accept 8,500 illegal immigrants every year, i.e. the migrant quota for Hungary would correspond to almost thirty percent of all persons to be relocated.
The European plan for the reconsidered migrant quota is contrary to the principle, which was also included in the Hungarian Basic Law after the 2016 Hungarian referendum, according to which a foreign population cannot be settled in Hungary.
The Nézőpont Institute was therefore curious whether the Hungarians consider it acceptable to make a decision in Brussels on such an important matter without the consent of the Hungarian government.
