One should never despair of the role of the opposition, there have been such periods in the life of the RMDSZ before, pointed out the president of the Transylvanian Hungarian Interest Protection Association.
In an interview with Maszol.ro, Kelemen Hunor, president of the Romanian Hungarian Democratic Union (RMDSZ), assessed that everyone who is not in the government has a place in the opposition. "You cannot isolate a person in the opposition, because if you have your political messages, if you have a community to which you can deliver your political messages, if you have a vision, then you can say it," he declared.
He said about the expulsion of the RMDSZ from the new Romanian government: one of the clear reasons was "gaining loot, greed", and the other reason was that the Romanian politicians did not keep their word.
"After many years, it has been proven once again that a significant part of the Romanian political class cannot convey to society that you can take our promises seriously, because we keep our word. Rather, it means that we promise anything, then we change our minds, and it will happen somehow. This will somehow become one of the great chronic diseases of Romanian domestic politics," said the president of the RMDSZ.
According to Kelemen Hunor, the will of President Klaus Iohannis may have played a role in the RMDSZ's departure from the government, whose intentions are unknown, "but it is certain that he did not move a finger to ensure that the coalition continued," he said.
He said about the years he spent in the government in Bucharest: he was satisfied with the performance of all three RMDSZ ministers, they did a good job, and they deserve thanks for that. Attila Cseke not only managed the Ministry of Development well, but also managed to make it the best functioning ministry today. Barna Tánczos dealt with "difficult problems" at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, of which the bear issue is the best known, while Eduárd Károly Novák prepared the National Sports Strategy, the RMDSZ president reminded.
Kelemen Hunor called the amendment of the constitution the most important among his failures during his time in government, which was taken off the agenda due to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. According to the president of the RMDSZ, the lack of "vision on the one hand and courage on the other" contributed to this, which, according to him, is generally lacking in Romanian domestic politics.
The other major delay is the adoption of the Minorities Act, which was also put in "bracket" due to the war. Since the politicians of the RMDSZ saw that the war stirs up prejudices and fears, it is easy to direct hatred towards a certain group, they did not want the initiative to fail. If it has already turned out like this, the association will wait to accept it until it can secure the parliamentary majority - Kelemen Hunor pointed out.
The president said about the growing extremism in Romanian domestic politics: the RMDSZ must reject this and retain and address those good-faith Romanian partners, "who know that all this nonsense they are talking about is not true. We live here, this is our homeland. Regardless of the political regime, we lived here, we contributed to the building of this land, to the building of this country, to the building of Transylvania. This is our heritage, this is ours. So we don't want to take this away from anyone, nor do we want to take away our land. This must be said directly and clearly, and must be spoken clearly," stressed the president of the RMDSZ.
