The leaders of the member states of the European Union will meet again in Brussels: the two-day summit of the European Council will start in the Belgian capital on Thursday, in which Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will also participate.
In terms of the items on the agenda, it will be a rather colorful series of negotiations, among other things, illegal migration will be discussed, but the hottest topic of the discussions will certainly be EU funds. Brussels continues to withhold funds from our country, while new contributions from member states are requested to support Ukraine and to raise the salaries of the members of the European Commission.
- The proposals in the Union's budget proposal are frivolous and would put Hungary in an even more disadvantaged position than the current one - Zoltán Kovács, the Secretary of State responsible for international relations at the Prime Minister's Cabinet Office, said in a video interview.
"We have been enjoying injustice for eleven years now," Kovács said, explaining that they are singling out one country at a time without any objective basis. He added that we are suffering from systematic abuse, since the beginning of the migration crisis in 2015, Hungary has spent more than HUF 600 billion on border protection, and "they did not give a damn" to protect not only their own borders, but also those of Europe.
Zoltán Kovács pointed out: now, bypassing the previous decision of the Council of Heads of State and Government, a proposal has been put on the table that will put Hungary in an even more disadvantaged position than the current one with the mandatory quotas and the imposition of the registration obligation. At the same time, they withhold resources that would benefit the country - he underlined, adding: this is not a gift or some kind of donation, but compensation in the common market of European states.
They consider the proposal to be frivolous, he said, pointing out: Brussels has not accounted for the resources spent so far, what exactly this amount was used for, and what Hungary would benefit from.
Where is the money? - asked Zoltán Kovács, who says that since they are asking for more money in large batches, the suspicion is growing that this source no longer exists, it has already been spent.
The Secretary of State spoke about EU funds in connection with the fact that the two-day summit of the leaders of the EU member states will begin on Thursday in Brussels, and the support to be provided to Ukraine will certainly also be discussed. Contrary to our country's pro-peace position, Brussels would continue to finance the war, although it has not even been revealed where the EU funds intended for Ukraine will be taken from. As long as the money due to Hungary and Poland from the previous joint borrowing is withheld, Brussels intends to help Kyiv with new amounts in addition to the 72 billion euros of support so far.
Most recently, it was a 50 billion euro grant, but in order to achieve this, the European Union is demanding new resources from the member states to cover the deficit in the EU budget due to rising interest rates, and with the help of these to increase the salaries of the members of the European Commission.
