Hammer thrower Bence Halász made it to the finals on the opening day of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
The World Cup bronze medalist and European runner-up in the first group threw over the 77-meter qualifying level with his first attempt, the hammer landed at 78.13 meters. The weightlifter from Szombathely did not have to throw anymore, he can now prepare for Sunday's final, where the best 12 can continue.
"It was all very stressful. In fact, I started to get nervous last night, unfortunately, but then it gradually passed"
the pitcher told Hungarian journalists.
"The number of times I heard "go Bence, go Hungarians" when I entered the stadium was uncountable. It is impossible to say how much such a qualifier takes out of a person, but it is certain that you cannot relax. Of course, there is a lot more to this. It was very hectic, and it was also in the morning, and in the afternoon you are naturally capable of better performance. But there is, and that's the point."
The other two Hungarian competitors in the hammer throw, Dániel Rába and Donát Varga, are in group B of the qualifiers.
Bence Halász is happy for several reasons that the final came together on the first throw
He told M4 Sport that due to the high humidity and heat, it was important to spend as little time as possible in the throwing circle in the qualifiers, and he emphasized that there is a lot of pressure on him and that this causes quite a bit of nervousness, but he still performed well.
