They did it! Our athletes achieved historic Hungarian success in tennis at the US Open: in the 142-year-old lexicon of the championship, it has not yet been recorded that two Hungarians reached the 2nd round in the men's singles.
A miracle happened on Monday, Fábián Marozsán and Márton Fucsovics both defeated their better opponents in a five-set battle. At the same time, Udvardy Panna, the only Hungarian participant in the women's main table, did not succeed.
On the first day of the US Open, at least one Hungarian was on the court almost continuously from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Fábia Marozsán started and won against Richard Gasquet in 3 hours and 18 minutes. Márton Fucsovics also played a five-set match, only his match lasted 4 hours and 25 minutes before he defeated Sebastian Korda, who he lost to in the Winston-Salem ATP 250 tournament five days ago, Index reminds.
Marozsán, the young Hungarian, had a hard time finding the words about where one draws strength from in the final set.
"You're on the court, that's why you fight all your life to be able to play in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. I was always motivated by the fact that I could beat this guy and have something to earn. Of course, there were difficult moments, but you have to get over them, and then if you take advantage of an opportunity, it boosts your confidence and you get into the rut of just playing and pushing on."
– he stated.
About his next opponent on Wednesday, Marozsán said: Mannarino is an unpleasant, dangerous player, and it is always difficult to play against left-handers anyway. A day off is good for him, and then he tries to get the most out of himself.
Fucsovics' battle against Korda was similarly exciting, his next opponent will be the Australian Rinky Hijikata, ranked 110th in the world ranking.
