The Romanian press is afraid that after what happened in the match against Kosovo, their national football team will have to play their next domestic European qualifier behind closed doors.
On Tuesday, the Romania-Kosovo European Championship qualifier was interrupted because the Romanian fans repeated for several minutes that "Kosovo belongs to Serbia", implying that they do not recognize Kosovo's independence from Serbia.
The meeting resumed after a roughly 40-50 minute break, and the Romanians, playing with a man advantage for more than a half, won 2-0.
According to the Romanian press, there is a risk that the local association will be punished, and the national team will have to play its next home European qualifier, the meeting against Andorra, behind closed doors.
Romania is close to punishment, Hungary escaped
- writes sport.ro in the subtitle of one of its Wednesday morning articles.
The text then continues:
"After what happened, there is a very high chance that Romania will have to play its next home match against Andorra without spectators. However, in March, the UEFA officials were not so alert when the Hungarian ultras (in the warm-up match against Estonia - ed.) stretched a banner addressed to Romania. To be exact, the flag of Great Hungary was hung in a clearly visible place, behind one of the gates."
The European Union will make a decision on the case of the Romanians later.
Romania is undefeated in second place in Group I of the European Championship qualifying series, two points behind Switzerland and one point ahead of Israel. The Romanian national team has home matches against Andorra (October 15) and Switzerland (November 21), and away matches against Belarus (October 12) and Israel (November 18) in the remainder of the qualification series.
