About four hundred farmers protested and held a demonstration near the Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossing in Záhony against the Brussels decision taken on Friday to cancel the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain.
The producers marched with tractors and other agricultural machines on highway 4 leading to the border station, occupying one of the traffic lanes with their machines.
István Jakab, the president of the Association of Hungarian Farmers' Unions and Farmers' Cooperatives (Magosz), which organized the demonstration together with the National Chamber of Agriculture, called the European Commission's decision not to extend the import ban on Ukrainian grain unacceptable for Hungarian farmers.
The farmers clearly stand by the Hungarian government, which extended and expanded the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products against the commission's decision, stated the president of Magosz.
He added that, on behalf of the farmers, Magosz is writing an open letter to Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, asking them to make a decision on the matter on a professional basis and according to criteria.
