On October 14, there was a big holiday in Geszteréd.
The people living here were finally able to see how the 1,200-year-old treasure, the Geszteréd Golden Sable, which had been dug out of the ground by pigs nearly a hundred years ago, could have looked like in reality. The masterpiece, which was created based on the archaeologists' description, praises the work of István Szabó, a traditional gunsmith, folk craftsman, and goldsmith Ádám Strohmayer.
The authentic reconstruction of the Geszteréd Golden Cabinet was first presented in the Hungarian National Museum on March 18, 2023 - thus the name of the Szabolcs settlement became even more well-known throughout the country - and then the unique reconstruction could be admired by visitors to the Déry Museum in Debrecen from September, and a highly successful scientific conference was also organized in the museum .
This is how the "treasure" of the settlement finally came home to Geszteréd, so that the villagers could also see the legendary "golden saber", the appearance of which they had only dreamed of until now.
The unique artefact, worth HUF 40 million, will be kept by the András Jósa Museum in Nyíregyháza (the museum was created to safely store the golden saber handle from Geszteréd and the group of finds discovered there).
A ceremony was organized to present the reconstruction, in the first part of which János Horváth, a parish priest from Kállósemjén, born in Geszteréd, presented a mass in St. Anne's Church. The Holy Mass was offered for the peaceful coexistence of the residents of Geszteréd. After the mass, a dramatic play by children attending St. Anne's Catholic Kindergarten presented the history of the Geszteréd Golden Saber, followed by speeches.
