Robert Fico, the newly appointed prime minister of Slovakia, announced on Thursday before the two-day EU summit in Bratislava: he rejects further sanctions against Russia and does not support the delivery of weapons to Ukraine either.
Robert Fico, who has now confirmed his previously expressed opinion on the subject, spoke about it in the European affairs committee of the Bratislava parliament, right before he left for the summit of the leaders of the European Union (EU) in Brussels.
Robert Fico emphasized: he will not vote for any sanctions against Russia until an analysis of their possible impact on Slovakia is put on the table, and if it turns out that the sanctions would have a harmful effect on Slovakia, then there is no question of supporting them.
He noted: the imposition of new sanctions against Russia is expected this time by the Baltic states.
"If the sanctions are such that they can cause us harm, then I see no reason to support even their message," stated Robert Fico.
The Slovak politician, who was installed as prime minister for the fourth time on Wednesday, has previously stated several times that EU sanctions against Russia are ineffective and harmful to Slovakia and the European economy.
The Slovak Prime Minister also spoke about the conflict in Ukraine, regarding which he confirmed his earlier statements that Slovakia rejects the delivery of weapons to Ukraine and supports an immediate ceasefire.
As head of government, I will support that Ukraine receives zero military support, said Robert Fico.
He added that his government's position is that the EU should change its current role as a weapons supplier to a peacemaker.
