"The further we go to the left, the greater the confusion," declared Merav Michaeli, whipping his comrades hard.
The politician, who is the grandson of Rezső Kasztner, who organized actions to save Jews in Budapest during the Second World War, has been leading the Israeli Labor Party since January 2021. In his recent statement, he sharply opposed the left.
“I think something is very wrong with the left — it's become very clear that people who consider themselves Democrats, liberals, and progressives are supporting a kind of totalitarian terror that oppresses women and minorities,” he told Politico magazine interview.
“The more we go to the left, the more confusion there is. Something went very wrong along the way,” he added.
"I don't understand how someone waving the Hamas flag and calling for the killing of Jews can be pro-Palestinian. When I talk to people outside of Israel, it's important for me to make clear that right now even people who support the two-state solution are under attack," Michaeli added, referring to the left-wing Israelis, many of whom were injured and killed in the October 7 massacre.
For example, the body of B'Tselem peace activist Vivian Silvert was identified on Monday evening.
Regarding Hamas' requests for a cease-fire, Michaeli clarified: "If we ask for a cease-fire now, it will allow Hamas to rearm and continue to steal food and medicine from its own population."
