New hair-raising ideas have taken the form of decrees, the aim of which is to limit the use of the Hungarian language.
The Ukrainian government wants to determine by decree that teachers and students can speak Hungarian to each other in Hungarian schools in Transcarpathia only from 5 p.m., after the end of school hours, Hír TV points out. In the new decree, doctors would also be forbidden to speak Hungarian with their patients from now on.
Andrea Bocskor, a member of the European Parliament of Fidesz, called the new measure nonsense.
As he said, in order to become a member of the European Union, Ukraine would have to guarantee the rights of national minorities before the accession negotiations began.
"It is important that a lot of attention is currently focused on Ukraine, after the European Commission announced in its enlargement package the recommendation that it proposes to start accession negotiations with this country. However, it is also very important to take into account that the situation of minority rights has not improved one bit: decrees are appearing that forbid teachers, students, and even cleaning staff in schools to speak to each other in their mother tongue and explicitly stipulate that only the native language can be used in private life," Andrea Bocskor pointed out.
According to the Fidesz representative, it is not clear from all this that Ukraine wants to ensure equal rights for minorities and that it intends to comply with the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
