It's nothing: the e-waste management method of the University of Sopron became the world leader

Out of 54 leading universities in this field, presenting the world's best practices, the University of Sopron's e-waste collection and waste management application was ranked first in the UI GreenMetric competition, the university wrote in a statement on Saturday.

The University of Sopron, which in 2022 won the International Green Robe Award, also supported by the UN Environmental Protection Program, announced that it is also included in the UI GreenMetric sustainability ranking with a gold rating and is considered the 3rd greenest domestic university.

They wrote that the university has always been characterized by an ecological approach to responsible consumption, sustainable supply chains, nature-positive operations and biodiversity protection.

Another global recognition of this conscious attitude is the first place in the e-waste campaign announced by UI GreenMetric.

They added: Europe ranks first in the generation of e-waste per capita, according to the international non-profit organization Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum, "on average, each household in the European Union has 74 electronic items, of which 17 lie unused in drawers and cupboards ” (headphones, cables, hard drive, smartphone).

At the University of Sopron, they support development in this innovative field with continuous attitude-shaping activities and research, all taking into account the principles of the waste hierarchy, the 3R (reduction, reuse, recycling) and the circular economic model.

Attitude tests are being conducted among the university's citizens, in order to be able to meet expectations even more effectively, they said.

It is extremely important for the University of Sopron to consider e-waste more as valuable secondary raw materials,

therefore, their selective collection is primary, they emphasized.

The institution is "responsible and committed" to the prevention of e-waste generation and the separate collection of e-waste generated: professional transport and disposal are carried out only by licensed waste handlers, the announcement reads.
