According to Wikipedia, Bíró fled to Paris at the end of 1938 due to the Jewish laws in Hungary, and then emigrated to Argentina with his brother and a friend, György János Meyne, where, after further experiments with ink, he received the patent for his pen on June 10, 1943, forming Bíró Pens of Argentina company and started serial production from 1942 under the name Eterpen, from 1943 Stratopen and later, from 1944, under the name Birome (Bíró és Meyne).
The ballpoint pen still bears his name in many countries: in Spanish it is called birome, in French it is biron, and in English it is sometimes called biro-pen.
