All this is due to the MÁV tariff reform.

From March 1, 2024, a completely new system will replace the discount system of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), which will leave 22 out of 65 types of discounts, keeping the 50 percent discounts alive, eliminating the 20 and 30 percent discounts, and introducing the so-called stamped system.

All passengers under 14 and over 65 can travel free of charge, and all passengers between 14 and 25 can use a half-price ticket. In the future, those working in education and healthcare, as well as public employees, will be provided with unlimited travel at a 50 percent discount. Public transport in Hungary is free for travelers in the 90 percent discount category (for example, those with large families and people with disabilities).

We asked the MÁV Press Department separately how this change affects the situation of users of the Hungarian identity card, since so far the green card has enabled 4 trips a year within Hungary, with a 90 percent discount. We asked the MÁV Press Department about the evolution of the 90 percent discounts, as they said in their press release that those with a Hungarian identity card or a Hungarian identity card can also travel free of charge, and as they answered:

Thanks to the tariff reform, it will be possible to travel without charge on intercity public transport with a Hungarian ID card.

Trains requiring a seat ticket can be used by exchanging a seat ticket, and designated national bus routes can be used by exchanging an additional ticket.
