The president of the RMDSZ considers the decision to merge the elections in Romania to be a technical game of power.
According to the president of the RMDSZ, combining the elections in Romania "doesn't change anything", and for the association, the stake is to assert the Hungarian interest in Transylvania in this year's contests.
Kelemen Hunor reacted on Wednesday evening to the fact that the government coalition formed by the Romanian National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) decided that the European Parliament and local elections would be combined and held on June 9. In addition, the Romanian presidential election is organized in September, and the parliamentary contest in December.
Kelemen stated that the RMDSZ is not afraid of combining the elections, because "it has done the job, in fact, it has done it well in recent years, it stands boldly in front of the community".
"Combining the elections does not change the stakes: we must assert the interests of the Transylvanian Hungarians in 2024 as well. The Hungarians must win in the municipalities and we must preserve our European representation. This is the only way we can protect our community from the Romanian extremists: if we control the Hungarian-inhabited settlements, we have a strong representation in Bucharest and Brussels," wrote the president of the association in a post posted on his social media page.
According to Kelemen Hunor, the leaders of the Romanian government coalition have talked too much about technical games of power in the past period, but the citizens have had no time for them at all.
"However, this year should be about the further development of our settlements and the future of the European Union, not about political games. In the midst of the noise, I think we need sane and authentic voices, and these are us, we will be," stated the president of the RMDSZ.
Csoma Botond, the faction leader of the RMDSZ in the House of Representatives, previously told Krónika that the planned merger of local government and European Parliament elections would cause chaotic conditions in Romania.
According to the politician, the PNL insists on the merger so that its mayors can mobilize the voters and not be pushed into third place behind the extreme AUR, and the PSD does not oppose it because it is not in their interest for the PNL to become very weak, even from 2025 wants to continue to govern with the liberals.
From the perspective of the RMDSZ, it was not clear before whether the merger would be good or bad, but at the same time, the organization would rather combine other elections.
