There is a new leader of the largest organization uniting Hungarians in Vojvodina, but its priorities and allies have not changed.
Bálint Pásztor was elected as the new president of the Vojvodina Hungarian Association (VMSZ) at the party's XX. Tizztújító General Assembly, Zenta, on Saturday. After the death of the young politician's father, the late president István Pásztor, he led the VMSZ as acting president for four months.
In his program speech, Bálint Pásztor emphasized the preservation of identity, the representation of Hungarian interests in Vojvodina and the strategic cooperation with Hungary's Fidesz-KDNP and the Serbian Progressive Party.
Bálint Pásztor ran as the only candidate for the position of president of the Vojvodina Hungarian Association in the XX. Tizztító General Assembly in Zenta. Out of the 335 delegates, 333 voted for the politician and two voted against. After the announcement of the results, the new president of the party spoke about the future plans of the VMSZ.
"In the Hungarian Association of Vojvodina, we will continue to work in the future to preserve identity and create existence, embracing all local projects that aim to improve people's quality of life," emphasized the new president.
The VMSZ will continue to participate independently in the elections.
"As it has been continuously since 2007, we participate in the elections independently, serve the trust of the community independently, achieve our parliamentary mandates independently and then look for allies to implement our program. So there will be no changes in this regard," said Bálint Pásztor.
"I also consider it important to say that I want to be open to non-VMSZ intellectuals, but at the same time, in the Vojvodina Hungarian Association, we do not want and will not forgive the crimes committed against the general assembly and the VMSZ by those who committed them ten years ago.
So openness yes, inclusiveness yes, but of course we will not forget what happened ten years ago
and those who invaded our lives, who tried to present themselves as a false alternative, and then after a few months their undertaking and business collapsed, we cannot imagine cooperation with them. However, we can imagine cooperation with the Vojvodina Hungarian Democratic Party, the Hungarian Unity Party, and we want to maintain strategic cooperation with Fidesz and KDNP in Hungary, as well as with the Serbian Progressive Party in Serbia," emphasized the newly elected party chairman.
The 50-member Council was also elected at the VMSZ General Assembly. The inaugural meeting of the VMSZ Council will be held on Monday, when, among other things, the vice-presidents and the Management Committee will be elected.
