Romanians are moving to Hungary in increasing numbers due to utilities that are half as large and low real estate prices. In addition to the cost of living, the proximity to the border is also attractive to the people of Timisoara and Arad, so it is no coincidence that there are small Hungarian towns where the word Romanian is heard more and more often, reports Világgazdaság .

In addition to the cost of living, the proximity to the border is also attractive to those living in the vicinity of Timișoara and Arad. Digi24 reports that houses in Hungarian border towns were attacked for the first time immediately after Romania joined the EU in 2007.

At that time, houses could be found for 2,500 euros in Battonya, located just six kilometers from the border. In the meantime, although the prices have risen, the interest of the people of Arad to invest in these cheap houses is also increasing.

Even now, you can find houses with prices around 10,000 euros (4 million forints).

According to the Romanian newspaper, most of the houses are in very good condition, the owners moved to other areas of Hungary due to the lack of jobs. But Romanians who choose real estate in Hungary travel about an hour and a half thanks to the highway network.

Last year, at least 300 houses were sold in Hungarian border towns to Romanians coming from the western part of the country. Most of them still work in Romania and come to Hungarian properties on weekends or holidays. Others have moved out entirely.

The 2022 census data show that there is a Romanian community of approximately 36,000 people living in Hungary.

Most of them live in settlements close to the Romanian border. For example, about 2,000 Romanians live in Gyul, which is adjacent to Varsánd in Arad, and about 1,000 Romanians live in Battonya, which has a population of 5,000, three times more than in 2007, the Mandiner observed.
