The case of statue vandalism in Dunavecs was closed, the police announced. The Kunszentmiklós investigators recommend indicting a man who caused a total of HUF 1.2 million in damage to the parish.
It should be remembered that in the early hours of last May and December 31st, an unknown person damaged the statue of Our Lady of Medjugorje, which can be seen in the middle of a traffic circle in Dunavec.
The 29-year-old Romanian man suspected by the police initially denied his guilt, but later confessed.
He said that the first time he was walking drunk, he threw a stone at the statue when he reached the roundabout. And on New Year's Eve, he had a fight with his wife and then hopped on his mother-in-law's bike to clear his head.
When he reached a roundabout on the outskirts of the city while cycling, he hit the statue's head with an ax, which shattered it.
Both times, the work of art could only be restored for hundreds of thousands of forints.
