"The ink is not yet dry" on the law making abortion a fundamental right, the French government has already submitted its new anti-life bill, and on May 27 the representatives will vote on the authorization of assisted suicide.
The draft was presented by the French Minister of Labour, Health and Solidarity, Catherine Vautrin. The bill was finally supported by Emmanuel Macron, the French president, after a 2023 report came out, according to which most French citizens support active euthanasia, reports axioma.hu.
The bill would allow patients to have access to euthanasia, which the government says is "an ethical response to the needs of patients and those who are suffering." They believe that the new regulation would create a balance between "respect and the autonomy of individuals".
In order to request euthanasia, under the new bill, a person must be of legal age (over 18) and a French citizen or have a French residence permit. After submitting a request for euthanasia, a team of medical professionals must confirm that the applicant suffers from a serious and incurable disease, is in intractable pain and wishes to die of his own free will. The person must be able to express their wishes. This therefore excludes those suffering from serious psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, even if they have indicated that they wish to be euthanized before their mental capacity declines.
If the applicant's application is approved, then
the doctor writes a prescription valid for three months for a lethal drug that can be taken at home, in a nursing home, or in another medical facility.
