A recent research reveals which European countries' residents are most and least attached to their home country.
According to the relevant results of the European Social Survey (ESS), which were seen by the news portal Hotnews.ro, among the 23 countries examined, the inhabitants of Bulgaria have the strongest ties to their country: 53.6 percent of them gave the maximum score.
They are followed by Greeks and Montenegrins: 44.2 percent of the former and 43.4 percent of the latter are very patriotic, while 42.8 percent of residents in Portugal are.
Hungary is in fifth place in the ranking with 39.3 percent, followed immediately by Romania with 38.2 percent.
Otherwise, the respondents could describe their relationship with their country on a scale of ten.
The proportion of Romanians who have no ties to their country at all is 0.8 percent, and that of Hungarians is 0.3 percent. Meanwhile, in Hungary, only slightly more than 7 percent of the respondents did not give their patriotism a grade of at least 5, i.e. "passing" (so they chose between 0-4), while in Romania the proportion is almost 17 percent.
Looking at the other end of the ranking, the Netherlands has the lowest percentage of those who are maximally attached to their country: only 6.5 percent of the respondents.
Neither the Belgians (9.7) nor the British (15.5) "suffer" from excessive patriotism. The proportion of those who have no ties to their country at all is highest in North Macedonia (2.3), Belgium (2.1) and Great Britain (1.3).
It is interesting that Bulgaria, which excels in patriotism, is also at the forefront of the completely "insensitive" with its one percent, according to the Hotnews article.
