Ilaria Salis addressed her followers in a letter, in which she explained how she decided to accept the candidacy as an EP representative.
Corriere della Sera published Ilaria Salis' letter in an online article. In the letter, Salis thanked the Italian people, his friends and strangers alike, for standing by him and supporting him "without being indifferent to the harrowing story of which I have been the protagonist for more than a year."
"My aim is not to escape the proceedings in which I have been accused, but to defend myself in the trial respecting fundamental rights, the principle of proportionality and the presumption of innocence.
I know I am not unique or exceptional. I was lucky that they did not forget me, but similar unjust situations are common in different countries of Europe.
For this reason, after sleepless nights and weeks of agonizing reflection, I have decided to accept the candidature as an EP representative.
To draw attention to other people who are in the same situation as me, and to transform my unfortunate story into something constructive in terms of the protection of fundamental rights," wrote Salis.
