The Ministry of the Interior clarified the situation and denied the claims published in the press.
Teachers continue to be persons performing public duties, so the crimes committed against them should be punished with priority, the Ministry of the Interior announced.
"Contrary to published press reports, teachers and those employed in positions directly supporting educational work are still public servants. When judging the crimes committed against them - if it can be established that they are related to the performance of a public duty - the penal code lists teachers as performing a public duty," reads the announcement of the Ministry of the Interior.
Although a paragraph was temporarily removed from the Public Education Act on January 1 of this year, the teachers who perform these tasks did not lose their quality of performing public duties,
the regulatory coherence between the Public Education Act and the Criminal Code continued to exist, the communique emphasized.
In order to prevent possible difficulties in the application of the law, and to ensure continuous and uniform legal practice, the legislator amended the Public Education Act with effect from May 11, so that the provision on the quality of a person performing a public duty for teachers and those holding positions supporting education and training is again included verbatim in the Public Education Act among its rules.
