According to the news channel of the Flemish public broadcaster VRT, the host of the local radio station Waregem1 said the following:
For all those who are considering shooting Alexander De Croo but can't because of the guy's safety. They see that you can shoot a prime minister. That's why I would say: Let's go!
The channel said in a statement that it immediately suspended the presenter, arguing that he "completely misjudged the timing and context and could not have made this statement".
"Yesterday at Waregem1, an employee made an incorrect statement. The host says he meant it playfully, but it didn't come across that way. He apologizes to the students and Waregem1"
says the statement .
After the assassination of the Slovak Prime Minister, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was threatened, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also reported on social media that he had received death threats. The politician's communications director reacted to the presenter's words and filed a complaint.
The communication director of the Belgian prime minister, Barend Leyts, wrote in a post published on social media that
the host called on listeners to "do their thing despite the security around the guy" and referred to the attack on Prime Minister Fico in Slovakia.
"Incitement to violence is punishable. The report was made at the Waregem police station. The prime minister will continue his campaign," said the prime minister's communications director. Federal elections will be held in Belgium on June 9.
