Several people were injured in the market square in Mannheim after a maniac attacked people in the crowd around noon on Friday, according to reports, a police officer was also injured.
According to the news channel Visegrád24, an "Islamist terrorist attack" took place, among the injured is Michael Stürzenberger, a conservative politician and anti-Islamic activist, who participated in the meeting of the Pax Europa civil movement in the market square. The man has to undergo emergency surgery, but according to the news, his life is not in danger.
The attack took place at a right-wing demonstration, and videos from the scene show a policeman shooting at the suspect while the alleged attacker was fighting with one of the policeman's colleagues. The assailant - who, according to BILD's information, is 25-year-old Afghan Sulaiman A. - was specifically trying to attack the 59-year-old Islam critic activist Michael Stürzenberger, who was supposed to speak at the event, and he is also among the injured, according to local reports.
Police said the attacker was shot and wounded. The authorities have indicated that the population is no longer in danger. Ambulances and a rescue helicopter also arrived at the scene.
The German police did not say exactly how many people were injured, but reports from the scene indicated that three people were attacked.
The local newspaper Mannheimer Morgen quoted a police spokesman as saying that one of the police officers at the scene was also seriously injured. In the video circulating on the Internet, he is the one who is repeatedly stabbed by the attacker.
