István Ujhelyi, a social democratic member of the European Parliament (EP), who left on June 1, was appointed ambassador of the UN Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).

According to a statement from the representative's office in Brussels, the ambassador's task will be to maintain contact with the EU institutions and to operate the organization's permanent representation in Brussels.

In the announcement, it was recalled that István Ujhelyi's primary policy area was tourism in the European Parliament, and the professional round table called "Tourism Manifesto" bringing together more than seventy professional organizations was created on his initiative.

István Ujhelyi took a role in the free train pass program for eighteen-year-olds, the so-called DiscoverEU program, and also in the EU tender for European cities named "European Capital of Smart Tourism".

The representative was already an extraordinary ambassador of the specialized world organization of the UN, the official status was offered to him at the end of his mandate as an EP representative, the office announced.
