The Fidesz faction leader considers cooperation with AUR to be unthinkable.
On Wednesday, the conservative ECR became the third largest party in the new parliament with at least 88 seats, after the Romanian nationalist AUR party also joined, reports the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
In the second round of accession, the ECR's European Parliament group increased by 83 members.
Máté Kocsis, the parliamentary faction leader of Fidesz, announced the news on social media:
"The extremely anti-Hungarian Romanian AUR was included in the ECR faction. There is no question of Fidesz sitting in a group with such a party in the European Parliament! Out of the question!”
AUR (Unification of Romanians) achieved 14 percent in this year's European Parliament elections, making it the second strongest Romanian party.
The head of the ECR, Giorgia Meloni, held talks with Vikor Orbán in Brussels a few days ago. The Hungarian prime minister has repeatedly indicated that Fidesz, which has been politicizing among independents since leaving the People's Party, would like to join the ECR, but several of its member parties reject this.
