When King St. István placed the Hungarian nation on a Christian foundation, it was the Benedictine order of St. Benedict from Norcia that made this historic act possible and helped. This was reciprocated now.

The Hungarian state has repaid or repaid its historical debt with the support of the Italian Benedictine community - stated the state secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in charge of programs to help persecuted Christians in the current program of the M1 channel.

Azbej Tristan told me that

In two phases, the government supported the construction of a new Benedictine monastery in Norcia with a total of HUF 270 million, the restoration of the damaged church and the construction of a new pilgrimage house, after the 2016 earthquake destroyed the scene of the religious life of the Benedictine community there, the monastery and the basilica.

He mentioned that when King St. István put the Hungarian nation on a Christian foundation, it was the Benedictine order of St. Benedict from Norcia that made this historic act possible and helped him. This was reciprocated now, he added.

The Secretary of State indicated that the Benedictines from Norcia - in the hope of support - contacted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with their letter because the Hungarian government represents the strongest Christian values in Europe. They were not disappointed, he added.

They also expressed their gratitude by naming a room in the new monastery the Hungarian Hall, giving space to the cult of St. Stephen, while a statue of King St. Stephen was erected on the side altar of their restored church, and Cardinal Péter Erdő sent a relic of St. Stephen to the altar.

Tristan Azbey explained.

Kelemen Sárai-Szabó, the priest of the Szent Mór Benedictine monastery in Győr, said that the Italian Benedictines received financial assistance through the Hungary Helps Program.

He mentioned that Hungarian Christianity has its roots in the Italian Benedictines, and thanks to their support they found each other again. He expressed his hope that, thanks to this, an alliance similar to the prayer community that has existed between Monte Casino and Pannonhalma for centuries can be formed between the Benedictines of Győr and Norcia.
