An armed attack on Christian churches, a synagogue and a police station in Dagestan, among the victims are civilians and police officers.

More than 15 policemen became the victims of the terrorist attack, who defended the peace and tranquility of Dagestan with guns in their hands, said the leader of the region, Sergey Melikov, at dawn on Monday. in a video posted on his Telegram channel.

The leader of the republic belonging to Russia said that six armed attackers had been eliminated.

On Monday morning, the Russian Investigative Committee (SZK) announced the death of 15 policemen and four civilians, including an Orthodox priest, as well as the liquidation of five terrorists. According to the SZK, the attackers have been identified.

The head of the republic announced that the active phase of the operational combat measures in Makhachkala and Derbent has ended, the investigation and the search for the members of the "sleeper cells" will continue.

He said that the terrorist attack was prepared from abroad, among other things.

Melihov, who promised financial support to the relatives of the victims and the injured, announced three days of mourning in Dagestan. According to the Republic's Ministry of the Interior, 16 people are being treated in hospital.

On Sunday evening, an armed attack hit an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent, Dagestan, and an Orthodox church and a traffic police station in Makhachkala.

A firefight also broke out in the village of Szergokala near Derbent. The priest of the church in Derbent, Nikolai Kotelnikov, lost his life.

The SZK initiated criminal proceedings for the terrorist attack and the possession and theft of firearms.

The RIA Novostyi news agency, citing internal affairs sources, reported that Magomed Omarov, the head of the Szergokala district on the Caspian Sea, whose two sons and nephews took part in the attack, had been detained. All three lost their lives. Omarov, who was the regional secretary of the Russian ruling party United Russia, was expelled from the political organization.

The newspaper RBK, also referring to the law enforcement agencies, wrote that several of the attackers are listed in the internal affairs register because of their relations with Wahhabi circles.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin is in constant contact with law enforcement and medical services in Dagestan.

In response to a question, he said that Moscow is not afraid that the chaotic conditions typical of the beginning of the century may return to the North Caucasus region.

Peskov said that unlike several leaders of the CIS member states, none of the governments of states unfriendly to Russia expressed their condolences for the terrorist attack in Dagestan.
