The driver of a stolen taxi caused a fatal accident on Wednesday evening in Budapest, on the side of the Árpád bridge leading from Pest to Buda.

According to primary data, a motorist driving against traffic hit several cars on the side of the Árpád Bridge from Pest to Buda on Wednesday evening around 10 p.m.

According to the National Disaster Management Directorate, the firefighters freed the passengers trapped in the vehicles with tension cutters.

Due to the accident, tram 1 running across the bridge was also closed for a while.

The site Accident-info reported that

a man fled with the traffic in front of a Toyota Camry taxi, after he forcibly took the car from the taxi owner at the Buda end of the bridge, and then collided head-on with a Suzuki Ignis coming legally from Népfürdő utca, which spun around, and at that time the Skoda combi taxi coming behind also ran into it to Suzuki.

"Almost everyone was trapped in the wreckage, all the doors of the Ignis were cut off and the roof was raised by the firemen, the front left door of the Skoda taxi also had to be cut off, as well as both left doors of the Camry".

The person driving the taxi driving against the traffic and the two passengers of the Suzuki lost their lives in the accident.

The Disaster Management Authority published a video on its social media page showing how the rescue work was carried out after the accident.

The technical rescue was carried out by twenty firefighters with six fire trucks, during which the units, under the guidance of the disaster prevention operations service, freed the passengers trapped in the vehicles as a result of the collision with three tension cutters. Four people were taken to hospital for injuries.
