Thousands of Welt commentators supported Viktor Orbán's peace mission against Brussels.

Most of the thousands of comments under Welt's report support the Hungarian position.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited Moscow in the first days of the EU presidency to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The event provoked fierce criticism in EU circles. For example, Josep Borrell emphasized that Viktor Orbán did not have a mandate from Brussels for this trip, and that the visit only affects bilateral relations between Hungary and Russia. But Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also expressed their displeasure with the Prime Minister's peace mission. Welt was worried about the canceled meeting, but its commentators sided with Viktor Orbán

In connection with the peace mission of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Welt wrote, among other things, that Hungary canceled the meeting planned for Monday between Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) and her colleague Péter Szijjártó in Budapest, because, as the Hungarian Prime Minister announced, another meeting will follow on Monday in connection with the peace mission.

According to the Welt article, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the resignation because "a serious and honest personal meeting between the two foreign ministers (...) would have been very important due to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's surprising and uncoordinated trip to Moscow," the ministry added.

However, Welt's report, thousands of comments were written, most of which support the Hungarian government and its peace mission. We have translated some of them, which we will share below:

Claude T.:

"Finally, someone capable of serious peace negotiations. Vladimir hardly takes the rest of the kindergarten seriously."

Manfred W.:

"Putin certainly takes Orbán more seriously than Leyen, Borrell, Scholz, etc. Orbán was with Zelensky before, maybe he sent a message to Putin? It is clear that the EU's policy regarding the war in Ukraine has so far failed"

Joseph T:

"No one takes Bärbock seriously. It doesn't matter if it's there or not."

Konrad B.:

“Anyone in their right mind could probably dispense with Ms. Baerbock's moral instructions.
It's also good for the climate."

Gernot G.:

"Hungary cancels Baerbock, China cancels Habeck, Israel cancels German intervention, economic development cancels Germany - how can that be?"

Jörg G.:

"Hungarians don't want to listen to moralizing stuttering...so what? I understand that Hungarians don't want to waste their time."

Alexander W.:

"At best, peace will finally return this year. Orbán and the EU have the opportunity to play an important role here. That's why the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded."
