For now, there are still many more questions than answers in the case of the assassination of the US presidential candidate.

Never before has it been more important than now to remain united, strong and determined, and to show our true character as Americans, Donald Trump wrote on Sunday on the social networking site Truth Social, a few hours after the assassination attempt against him.

We can't let evil win - said the Republican presidential candidate, who also wrote that "only God prevented the unthinkable from happening."

We do not give in to fear, but remain steadfast in our faith and confront evil, he added.

Melania Trump called the former first lady a monster.

"A monster(…)tried to extinguish Donald's passion, his laughter, his ingenuity, his love of music and his inspiration," Melania Trump wrote on X.

Let's remember that different opinions, policies and political games are dwarfed by love, said the former first lady, who has been married to Trump since 2005. In her message, Melania Trump, like her husband, called for unity.

Let's remember that beyond right and left, red and blue, we all come from families who are passionately fighting together for a better life - writes Donald Trump's wife in a statement published on X.

Citing an internal memo from Trump's campaign staff, the news portal Politico reported that they would confirm the presence of armed security guards at campaign sites after the attack.

In the memo, members of the campaign staff were also asked to stay away from the Washington and West Palm Beach offices on Sunday, and not to comment publicly on the attack in any way.

Speaking to MSNBC television, Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of the Washington House of Representatives, said: it is a miracle that Trump escaped the attack alive, because the bullet missed its target "by just a millimeter" to seriously injure and even kill the former president. But Trump has almost inexhaustible energy and will continue to fight, he added.

Recently, the political discourse in the United States has become too heated, and it should be cooled down, Johnson said.

The Republican politician also reported that Congress will conduct a comprehensive investigation into whether mistakes were made during security measures at the campaign rally. According to him, an answer must also be found to the question, for example, how it is possible that the Secret Service, which provides the protection of the presidents, did not notice the armed assassin on the top of the tall building.

For now, there are still many more questions than answers, Johnson said.

Donald Trump was shot by a 20-year-old man at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The assassin fired several shots at the former president, who was only lightly wounded. Another person was killed in the attack and two others were critically injured. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is treating the case as an assassination attempt against Trump. The authorities killed the attacker on the spot.
