The former Polish prime minister would be aiming for European leadership laurels.

Although the Polish media previously reported that Morawiecki and Meloni could agree on the transfer of the management of the group, according to the latest news, the negotiations are still ongoing and the outcome is still uncertain.

According to sources close to Morawiecki, Meloni would not like to step down from the post of ECR president, but the Polish side is still trying to convince him. The ECR and Morawiecki's party, Law and Justice (PiS), have not yet commented on the matter.

If Morawiecki were to succeed, it would significantly strengthen his party's position on the European right,

especially after their defeat last year against Donald Tusk's centre-left coalition.

Moreover, the position of ECR president could also be a consolation for Morawiecki if he is not chosen as the candidate of the PiS party for next year's Polish presidential election. The current president Andrzej Duda's second term expires in 2025 and, according to the constitution, he cannot run again, so PiS is already looking for a new candidate, and in addition to Morawiecki, other possible candidates have emerged, including MEPs Patryk Jaki and Tobiasz Bocheński, as well as Mariusz Błaszczak also the name of a former defense minister.

PiS is expected to hold its congress in September or early October, where party leader Jarosław Kaczyński can announce the name of the party's presidential candidate. The candidate of the governing coalition has not yet been named, but Donald Tusk ruled out running for the presidency.
