In recent years, there were millet, plum dumplings, and meringue, and this year the jury voted for the poppy, so the creation of Vác confectioner Alfréd Kovács, the Poppy Flower, became the National Cake. Olympic champion pastry chef Hanna Erdős gives her opinion on the winning dessert below.

"Every year, I excitedly wait to see what the expert jury chooses," said Hanna Erdős, who says that, unlike walnuts, the poppy has suffered a neglected fate. "We almost only meet it at Christmas in bagels, and of the dishes, only poppy seed noodles or pasta are on the tables. Maybe now it will also be more popular in the world of cakes and cookies," the specialist continued.

Pleasant tartness

"The competition notice also included the requirement to work with superfoods, and there was a basket of ingredients that should be included in the winning cake. There will be interesting flavors this year, the poppy has a pleasant tartness," explained Hanna Erdős, who is mostly interested in whether this cake will be as consistently attractive as, for example, Őrség Zöld Aranya, which is still on offer in many pastry shops. .
