Christoph Daum was diagnosed with lung cancer in the summer of 2022. The coach died on Saturday, surrounded by his family in Cologne, the German news agency DPA reported based on the family's information.
Born in Zwickau, Daum only played football at the amateur level, but at the age of 33 he became a coach at 1. FC Köln, whose second team he previously played for.
In Germany, he achieved his greatest coaching success in 1992 with VfB Stuttgart, with which he won the league title and the Super Cup, while he won silver medals in the German top flight with Köln twice (1989 and 1990) and Bayer Leverkusen three times (1997, 1999, 2000).
In Turkey, he won the championship three times (in 1995 with Besiktas, 2004 and 2005 with Fenerbahce), and once a cup (1994, Besiktas). Former Austrian champion with Austria Wien (2003) and Belgian silver medalist with FC Bruges (2012). His last team was the Romanian national team, which he managed from July 2016 to September 2017.
During his career, the rather hot-tempered coach had a chance to become the German national team captain, most notably after the 2000 European Championship, but he was ultimately not appointed due to his alcohol problems and drug scandal. Christoph Daum would have been 71 in October.
