The Fidesz-KDNP representative group pointed out that those who, out of political bias, are now mocking the new duties of the Hungarian commissioner candidate, are actually mocking patients and healthcare workers.

Hungarian EU Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi called it a great honor that on Tuesday Ursula Von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, nominated him for the position of Commissioner responsible for health and animal welfare.

In a message posted on Olivér Várhelyi's social media page, he wrote that the nomination is recognition of Hungarian healthcare and knowledge that has been at the forefront of the world for more than a hundred years, characterized by such great names as Ignác Semmelweis, Albert Szentgyörgyi or Katalin Karikó.

It is a huge task to authentically represent this excellence, said Várhelyi, and then he continued: he is trying to earn the trust with hard work, as he has done for the past 5 years.

As Hungarian EU Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi was responsible for enlargement and neighborhood policy in the European Commission for the past five years.

Ursula von der Leyen, when presenting the candidates for the newly composed EU committee, announced that Olivér Várhelyi will be responsible for the construction of the common European health union in the board of commissioners, and he will lead the work to combat cancer and disease prevention.

The European Parliament (EP) representative group of the Fidesz-KDNP called the work of the EU Commissioner responsible for health a defining task.

"We are barely over an epidemic that shook the whole world, the consequences of which we are still feeling today. Many experts say that we have entered the age of epidemics. This perfectly shows that healthcare is one of the most important areas determining the future of the EU," said the group of representatives.

Those who, out of political bias, are now mocking the new duties of the Hungarian commissioner candidate, are actually mocking patients and healthcare workers, they pointed out.

"Important and difficult tasks were entrusted to the Hungarian Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi. We are convinced that the Hungarian Commissioner will successfully cope with these tasks as well. Olivér Várhelyi can count on our support," said Tamás Deutsch, head of the Fidesz-KDNP parliamentary group and a member of the EU parliamentary group Patriots for Europe.
